Optimizing irrigation management is essential in a country like Egypt: water scarcity, associated with extreme weather conditions (high demand for crops) lead farmers to improve irrigation efficiency in order to be profitable. Installing solar panels requires a sound sizing and long term planning. For these reasons, and beside their contribution to the solar energy development in the Râ country, the German cooperation wanted to work on irrigation water management improvement in Egypt.
Problems with irrigation management in desert conditions are multiple: we can mention for instance the risk of soil salinization (as there is no rain, there isn’t any natural salt leaching), or dripper clogging due to high iron concentration in the irrigation water. Through these trainings (on the picture: training at SEKEM in Bahareya Oasis in December) we helped technicians and engineers to find practical solutions, and finally to optimize the desert’s blue gold: water.
